Resolutions Cravebox Review, plus, Giveaway?

Oh. My. Gosh,  you guys- I FINALLY won a web contest!  I have entered these things for years, off an on, and I NEVER win anything!  Even if I'm told I "won" something, it's a crappy coupon, or it never actually arrives!

I entered a contest on my fellow blogger Leigh's site,Whimsical Adventures of a Magical Mom.  Go on, head over there and check it out.  I'll wait.
.
..
...
Back now?  Great.  Leigh was offered the chance to give away a Resolutions Cravebox, and I was the lucky winner!  Leigh was awesome getting in touch with me, and could probably hear me whoo who'ing all the way at her home in NC!

The awesome thing about becoming a beauty junkie is learning about all the awesome monthly delivery services out there, and not just for makeup!  I had never heard about Cravebox (and lots of other boxes!)before I read Leigh's blog; and I am so excited to receive it and give this subscription service a test run before I fork over some of my husband's hard earned dollars to do so.

Here's my thoughts on the awesome Resolutions Cravebox; so named after what we all make in January, and most of us break before February (or give up for Lent!!) :)

It looks like it's ready to pop!

I cracked open the box, and then peered inside.

Seriously packed box!

This box is seriously crammed full of goodies!

The letter talks about what Cravebox is, and how to get one, and has an encouraging message about keeping your resolutions.

I love the letter, explaining how the products inside will help you keep your New Year's resolutions to get healthy.  It would be nice if the letter goes over the products in the box, though, maybe they will do this in the future!

Wholly Guacamole coupon for a free product; go HERE for product info, coupons, and more

A chip clip and a coupon for a free Wholly Guacamole product?! SCORE!  My hubby and the kids LIVE on this stuff, so I will definitely be putting this coupon to good use!  We have guac at least once a week here (everyone but me loves it), and Wholly Guacamole is, in my opinion, THE best brand out there.  Plus, who DOESN'T need another chip clip- am I right?! I am loving this box already!

My hubby requested the Spicy guacamole :)
I went to my market to pick up the free items in my box, and my hubby called me, to ask me to get Spicy guac instead of the "original" that I usually pick up.  My oldest saw the Spicy in the fridge, and had a meltdown!  I assured her that I also purchased the original, and all was well in our world again.
A 14 oz packet of the guac retails for $4.99 at my local grocery market (coupon will not exceed $6.50); so as this is a coupon for a FREE product, I will count this at part of the value of my box.  Retail value: $4.99

Celestial Seasonings Metabo Balance wellness tea; available HERE; coupon code CSWELLNESS will earn you 10% off your order until 12/31/13

I used to be a tea drinker, and every now and then I fall back into the old habit of brewing myself a cup of tea, instead of the coffee that my husband prefers. I'm very familiar with Celestial Seasonings, but I've new to the Metabo Balance tea.  Tea that will help control my metabolism?!  Works for me!  My local grocery does carry this brand, but a box is priced at $5.49 for a box of 20 bags; at the CS website, a box of 20 bags is 3.49.  Even if I take that .75 off coupon to my store on triple coupon day, the 3.49, then 10% off is a WAY better deal. Retail value of this product comes to $0.17 (I don't count the coupons unless they are for FREE product!), based on the website price.
GRADE: 4/5 (not sure if it made me want to eat less; it was a crazy day here!)

CocoaVia Daily Cocoa Extract Suppliment variety sample pack; available HERE

I love to try new things, and I've never heard of the brand, CocoaVia before.  This is a 4 pack of samples of cocoa supplements, with flavoring.  The chocolate flavors are designed to be added to milk, coffee, etc; while the berry flavored ones work well in water or yogurt. This 4 pack contained sweetened dark chocolate, unsweetened dark chocolate, summer citrus, and cran-raspberry.  Each packet contains 250mg of cocoa flavanols; which are said to support healthy blood circulation.  We drink a LOT of flavored water here, so I was very curious to see what we thought of this brand.  I tried the sweetened dark chocolate in my coffee this morning, and had an epic fail on my behalf.  By the time I made it to the coffee pot, there was only about 1/2 a cup left, that was luke warm (my husband leaves for work around 6:30 am each morning; I get up around 7:30, when my youngest wakes up).  I added the powder to my sad little cup, and stirred it in.  First impression was that it was way to strong and had a major after taste.  I added a good bit of milk to my coffee (my home made way of making it a mochacino), and it was much better.  It tasted very much like hot chocolate powder.  I tried the cran-raspberry and added it to water; and I THINK I didn't add enough water.  I took a big gulp, and then topped my glass off again.  It was MUCH better.  Given the name has "cocoa" in it, I did expect a hint of chocolate taste, and was pleasantly surprised that there was none.  I much prefer the fruit flavors to the chocolate flavors, and this surprised me; but then again, I AM Only Average.  The chocolate packets have a weight of .27 oz; and the fruit flavors have a weight of .24 oz.  A box of these (30) retails for $39.95, but is currently on sale for $34.95.  You can also purchase a set of 2-15 packet boxes, in either the chocolate varieties or the fruit varieties, for the same price.  There is a coupon code on my packaging; however it has expired.  My sample packets (4) have a retail value of $4.68.

GRADE: 4/5 (not sure if this is a supplement I really NEED- after I try it for 4 days, if I feel better I will reconsider)

Perfectly Simple Cranberry Almond bar; go HERE for a product locator

Another brand I'm not too familiar with is Perfectly Simple.  My oldest daughter LOVES snack bars, and she was excited to try this one.  The cranberry almond flavor was, in her opinion, absolutely fantastic; that is, once you get over the appearance of the bar.  The bar is kind of a dark reddish brown, with bits of nuts here and there.  I think you probably can figure out what my first impression of what it looked like is..but I will tell you, the flavor absolutely made up for that!  I will absolutely pick these up for her at the market, if she asked me to.  The bar is 1.58 oz; and a 12 pack retails for $16.62 at Amazon; they aren't carried at my regular market.  I received a coupon for $1 off a 5 pack along with the bar (and I don't count this towards the value).  This sample has a retail value of $1.39.
GRADE: 4/5

Coupon for a FREE Smart Ones by Weight Watchers product; go HERE for a product locator

I love me some coupons, I'll be perfectly honest.  Free product coupons are the holy grail for any couponer!  I don't think I have ever tried the Smart Ones brand before, but I am at least familiar with the name.  These products retail $2.79-4.19 in my area, depending on the product (pizza, ice cream sundaes (!), pasta, breakfast foods, microwave meals, etc).

Smart Ones Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae (4 pack): yummy!
I picked up the 4 pack of the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundaes at my market, and we gave it a test run!  Oh. My. Gosh, y'all.  These were SO good.  For a "diet" food, these did NOT taste diet!  There is a bit of graham cracker crumb on the bottom, then ice cream, then chocolate syrup, and then cookie dough bits.  So freakin' awesome.  Best thing in this box, by far- my kids gobbled them up like they were going out of style, and I only got one!  My product retailed at $3.89 (coupon has a maximum value of $4)
GRADE:5/5 (absolute sinful perfection!)

Sun-Rype Fruit Source Bars in Mango Strawberry and Just Fruit & Grains bar in summer berry; go HERE for a store locator

We received 4 of the SunRype snack bars. 3 of them are Fruit Source plus Veggie bars, in the flavor Mango Strawberry; and the last one was the Just fruit & grains bar in the flavor Summer Berry.  My kids both tried the fruit source plus veggie bars, and they didn't care for them.  The bars have a pleasant smell, but the texture is a bit unexpected.  They kind of look like thick fruit roll ups, only more fruitier.  The bars are kind of soft, and kind of chewy.  I tried the fruit source plus veggie bar, and I thought it was just ok.  The fruit & grains bar was very similar, but had an unusual aftertaste to me. The grains gave the bars more of a "crunch" to them, and I personally didn't care for the texture.   I'm glad I got to try these- I liked the fruit source bars, but now I know to stay away from the fruit & grains bars; plus if I buy these, the kids will leave them alone and I will have a snack that no one will bother.  Score!  The FruitSource bars have a weight of 1.3 oz; and are available at Amazon, $50.31 for 48 bars (making 1 bar $1.04).  The Just Fruit & Grains bars weigh 1.5 oz, and are for sale at Amazon, $37.06 for 40 bars (making 1 bar $0.93). These 4 samples have a retail value of $4.05.
GRADE: 3/5

A&W Ten and 7Up Ten soda cans, go HERE for a product locator

Hello, I'm Only Average Mom, and I'm a soda junkie.  There, I said it.  I've always loved the fizzy drink, and love to try new ones.  I prefer to drink diet soda, and have for years.  My grandma put it best; if you want the soda, why do you want all the extra calories?  Just drink the diet!  I've drank diet soda for so many years, that regular soda tastes entirely too sweet to me, so I was excited to try these 10 calorie drinks out!  A&W brings back childhood memories of root beer floats at the A&W restaurant, drank out of glass mugs.  When we popped open this can, this is what I imagined.  Sadly, fantasy and reality did not mesh in this case.  The root beer had a "diet" aftertaste, but less than regular diet soda, according to my husband.  I think that some sodas need the full calories, and root beer is one of them.  My youngest and I popped open the 7Up 10; and although it was better, it lost its fizziness quickly and had an after taste.  I think I'll stick with my Diet Dr. Pepper; although the company gets an A for effort!  Each can is 12 fl oz, and retail at my local grocery market for $6.29/12 pack.  This makes each can $0.52 in value, and this sample set valued at $1.04.

Mary Kay Timewise repair volu-firm eye renewal cream, available HERE

I recently had the opportunity to try out lots of Mary Kay products, and enjoyed the majority of them.  I was very excited to see the MK Timewise repair volu-firm eye renewal in my package, a full size product!  I took the lid off to put a bit of product on my hand and was astonished to see the applicator tip!  It's metal and large; with the purpose to massage the cream into your skin. According to MK's webiste, this product:

  • Targets deep lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.
  • Targets undereye bags, puffiness and dark circles.
  • Targets crepiness and dry skin.
  • Increases skin moisture for 12 hours.
  • Features a unique liquid crystal delivery system that helps enhance effectiveness.
  • Contains the benefits of the Volu-Firm™ Complex.
Obviously, the results and effects listed here are things that I can't test in just a couple days, to see if they are true or not.  I will try this product for a week or so, and check back and let you know what I think!  Fair warning though: I have hooded eyes, so I'm not sure how I can test it for "sagging skin" (plus, I'm in my early 30's, people; these really aren't major issues for me!)  The product is pleasant to apply, and it is white.  The applicator looks a bit crazy at first, but it gives the eyes a very pleasant cooling feel.  Very nice.  I will say, though, after trying this product out for three days, it seriously works!  My fine lines under and around my eyes are smaller, my dark circles are less prominent, and my lids are less crepey (and eyeliner glides on SO easy now!).  I'm not sure my budget will allow me to repurchase this item, but it will definitely be on my wish list!  This product is FULL SIZE; with a weight of .5 oz, and retails for $40 (holy crow!).
GRADE: 4.5/5

Pantene Pro-V Silky Moisture Whip, available HERE

Pantene is a brand that I've used off and on, since high school.  I've never heard of the Moisture Whip line, though, and I was so excited to test it.  My hair is very dry, very curly, and very thin.  This isn't the best combination for anyone, so I am always on the lookout for a product that is designed to make my crazy hair less dry, more wavy and less kinky curly, and thicker. The first thing I noticed, is that the product comes out of the bottle really fast- I had a handfull of mousse with just a quick push of the button!  I applied this to my hair, and used no other product (so I can be sure the results I am seeing are from the moisture whip, and not something else!), and my hair did not become stiff, as you kind of expect from mousse; and my hair felt a bit more hydrated throughout the day.  I didn't experience any styling benefits, but in the product's defense, it doesn't advertise any.  The Moisture Whip is a deluxe size sample, at 26g (0.9 oz); the full size is priced at $5.97 (5.29 oz or 150g).  This makes my sample valued at $1.03
GRADE:4/5 (I still think of 80's hair when I think of mousse!)

Awesome box!  We loved trying everything!!

And that's it for my very first Cravebox review!  I am debating whether or not to sign up for Cravebox; it's a different type of subscription service.  What happens is, Cravebox announces a theme, and if you think you would like to try it, you enter your name in a raffle. If you are chosen in the raffle to receive the box, then you pay for it.  Boxes are priced from $12-16.  The Cravebox Resolutions box is a $15 box.  Again, I am NOT a Cravebox member, and only got to try this out thanks the the awesome Leigh over at Whimsical Adventures of a Magical Mom.  If you would like to learn more about Cravebox, you can go HERE.

Even though only a couple of things really WOW'ed me, I am so happy to try this service out.  I love how the boxes come packed with crinkle paper- we will definitely repurpose this in a craft, or in a birthday party bag (this is the year of the lava lamp; for anyone who is considering inviting my oldest to your child's party- everyone is getting a lava or glitter lamp.  Easy peasy- Five Below!).

The total retail value of this box is $61.24 (based on current pricing available in my area as best I could find)- which, is absolutely FANTASTIC for the $15 price; IF the items inside are ones you are already looking for.  I enjoyed trying this out, and am so happy to have won this box- I'm not sure I would have spent the money on it, as it isn't REALLY for our particular lifestyle, but I've been educated on some products to get, and some to steer clear for.  That's what these boxes are all about!

Well, thank you SO much Leigh, for giving this Only Average mom a chance to try something new; and inspiring me to work on having my OWN giveaway! That's right, I'm spreading the love- Leigh used rafflecopter to pick me as a winner, and I want to pick one too!  In the coming weeks (it's still Girl Scout cookie season, dude.  Plus, St. Patty's, hubby's birthday (Pi Day), Easter; and I have to be sure to have my little ducks in a row for all this stuff!) or possibly coming days, I'll be posting a contest to win a Profusion palette, very similar to the ones I reviewed in January, and ONE Average person will be it's new proud owner- so be sure to share the love you have of my Average world, and look for my contest post very soon!  Stay Average, y'all!

Disclaimer: I received these products as result of a contest I entered, and they were not sent to me by the vendor, but by a fellow blogger.  I was neither asked nor required to review the products, and all opinions listed are true and are my own (or my family's).

January eBay Haul, Part 3 (final!): Mary Kay, Nailtiques, Vichy Labs, Cetaphil, Clean Well, Dr Dennis Gross, Jergens

I know, I waited forever to write the final part of my review, and I'm very sorry!  Life has been kind of crazy this past week or so, and I just haven't had the time to sit down and thoroughly write my final post on the huge eBay haul I bought waaayy back in January.  Forgive me?!  Please??!!

My huge and crazy awesome eBay lot I purchased last month!
I've finally finished testing everything else in this lot, and I can't wait to share my thoughts with you!

Mary Kay botanical effects Freshen foil packet
This lot had a whole bunch of Mary Kay samples, and this is the LAST one!  I opened this foil pack one afternoon, and gave it a shot.  With a product called "Freshen", that is exactly what I was hoping for!  This is tricky to review, because freshen doesn't come in the form of wipes like this sample, but in a bottle.  When I opened the foil pack up, all I could think of was, glorified baby wipe, but I do think this was more due to the texture of the wipe in the sample, rather than the product itself.  The product has a pleasant scent, and I felt nice and dewy after I used the wipe.  I'm not sure I would actually purchase this in the future, as I already have face wash that I like, but it was nice for quick pick me up in the afternoon of a long day of being Only Average.  If you would like to try the Freshen, it is available for purchase HERE; $14 for 5 fl oz. ; I can't assign a sample value, as there isn't any weight listed on the packet; sorry!
Grade: 3/5 (and my least favorite of all the MK samples I received)

Nailtiques Oil Therapy
I used to be very obsessed with painting my nails, and keeping them all girly and pretty; my weekly manicure at the salon was a must have!  Well, "mommy-dom" changed that for me, and now I still go to the nail salon, but only for special occasions, or for a special treat.  The oil therapy by Nailtiques is reminiscent of the oil treatment that the manicurist puts on your nails, right before you go and wash your hands (only to return to "please pay now".  LOVE that!).  This therapy is an oil treatment for nails and cuticles, and it is easy to paint on.  I honestly don't notice any difference to my nails and cuticles after trying this three times, but perhaps this is a long term-type product, and my wimpy nails will be stronger in the future.  Time will tell!  If you like to have that real salon-feel at home, I'd say that this is a product for you.  I will let you all know if my nails get any thicker and break less frequently in the coming months, but for now, I'm giving this a neutral score.  My sample here is a full size (smaller size), and is available HERE; retails for $6.99 (this .25 fl oz size) or $11.99 for the larger .5 fl oz size.
GRADE: 3/5

Vichy Laboratories Liftactiv CxP UV
I tried an abundance of wrinkle cream in the past month, and let me tell you, out of all of them, this stuff works!  The Vichy labs cream is labeled on the tube as a bio-lifting daily care anti-wrinkle & firming broad spectrum sunscreen SPF 20 lotion.  Whew, that's a major mouthful!  I used this as my lotion for a week, and the sample provided had exactly enough to last a full week.  I noticed significant changes in my skin from the second application.  My little crows feet and laugh lines were way smaller, and my skin felt firm.  I LOVE this stuff!  I went to price it out, and of COURSE, out of all the products I tried, this is by FAR the most expensive: $40 for a .5 fl oz tube, making this .1 fl oz sample have a retail value of $8.  I abosulutely believe that you get what you pay for, and I will definitely wait for this to go on SALE so that I can convince my hubby that I should have it.  If you want to try this most awesome lotion yourself, go HERE.
GRADE: 5/5; higher if I could!

Cetaphil UVA/UVB defense SPF 50 facial moisturizer
I have super sensitive, weird skin, and I love to try new lotions to see how my crazy skin will react.  This lotion has a high SPF (and I'm saving some for summer!), which I love, and was ok as a moisturizer.  This just smelled like sunblock; which I suppose is basically what it is.  I loved the Vichy labs lotion so much, that I can't get excited about the Cetaphil one; but if you are of the fair persuasion, this is something I would highly recommend; especially if you spend a significant time outside.  If you would like to check this one out for yourself, go HERE; $11.19 for a full size (1.7 oz) tube; very reasonably priced.  My little sample is .20 fl oz, and has a retail value of $1.34.
GRADE: 4/5 (3/5 as a lotion, 5/5 as a sun protection product)

Clean Well All Natural Hand Sanitizing Wipe
It's currently cold and flu season in the part of the country I live, so I definitely had a chance to test this one out!  We all use hand sanitizer frequently in my home, so something that isn't in a tube to open and squirt all over my purse is seriously a welcome thing!

Awesome HUGE 5x7" wipe!

I opened up the foil pack to test it out, and was seriously wowed at how HUGE the wipe was!  I can't quite put my finger on the scent, but it's kind of a cross between lemon and vanilla.  Not a bad scent, but not a familiar one either.  These wipes are available HERE; in both canisters and foil packs.  A package of 250 foil packs is $137.99; my single sample is valued at $.55.
GRADE: 5/5

Dr Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pad
I don't really "do" the whole tanning thing, unless I can sit out on the beach and soak up the sun for real.  Guess it's a good thing I LIVE at the beach!  My beautiful 10 year old daughter is always excited to try new things, so she helped me test this one out.
The wipe was yellow, but it didn't stain my fingers.
I opened up the foil pack, and pulled out the little wipe.  It wasn't brown in color, but definitely a yellow.  I let my little bug try it out, and followed the package directions, rubbing it on in a circular motion.

"Before" shot (and I have NO idea what exactly is on the TV in the background- some kids show!)
Immediately after
I personally didn't notice any difference right after we applied the product, but I sent her to the bathroom, to add some more, and then we waited an hour and took another photo.
One hour later
NOW I see a difference!  It is important to note that the packet reads that the product does NOT contain any sunscreen (not really an issue for me because my BB creme is SPF 30), and to wash your hands immediately after use.  I am assuming the whole hand washing thing is to not stain your hands, and so that you don't get it in your mouth or eyes, but I'm really not sure.  Please note that I read this AFTER applying the product to my kid.  See why I'm Only Average?!  Well, you can judge the results for yourself; if you are a sunless tanner, and like what you see (all pictures are with a flash, in the same spot in my home, within only a 1hour total time lapse) go ahead and give these wipes a try!  They are available HERE; $18 for a 10 pack of wipes; making my sample of 1 wipe valued at $1.80.  I will add that having the wipes individually wrapped is definitely a convenient bonus in my thinking- easy to pack or add to your purse for an instant glow!
Grade: 4/5

Jergens Daily Moisture Lotion
The very last sample is a lotion sample; I love lotion and have a fairly decent assortment in the house to choose from.  I gave the Jergens a try, and it worked fairly well.  It was a bit greasy, but on par for most drugstore lotions (not body butters).  The lotion had a pleasant scent, and the sample was enough to do my hands and arms to my elbows.  I have another brand that is my current lotion fave, so I probably won't be picking this up, but it is a solid hand lotion.  If you want to give Jergens a try, go HERE; $3.99 for 10 fl oz (small size); $6.49 for 21 fl oz (large size).  My sample is .049 oz, and valued at $0.01.
GRADE: 4/5

Well, that concludes my review of all of the products in the eBay lot that I purchased.  The lot included 3 makeup bags and a mirror (which I LOVE!), but I didn't think that anyone would be interested in a review of those things.  I will say that I popped in eBay to see if I received feedback from the seller on this lot (haven't yet), and I noticed that her description of items included a few things that I did NOT receive; some jewelry items, a coupon, and more MK samples.  I am SO not worried about these missing items; I am very happy with the lot, and definitely got my money's worth. I only mention this, as a reminder to be careful when buying from eBay (or any auction/reseller site!), because all we ever have is the seller's word that the items being sent are as described.  I would totally buy another beauty sample lot again, and would buy from this seller (if you are reading this, seller, I LOVE this lot- thank you!  please leave us feedback!) again, if there was something I was looking for!

I hope you enjoyed my Only Average perspective on these great products, and maybe my thoughts and trials will help you find something new that you love!  Is there a product you would like to see me review?  A service you think I would like? Agree with me, disagree with me?  Leave me a comment, let me know!

January eBay Haul Review Part 2: CeraVe, Claudalie, Mary Kay, Raw Natural Minerals, Stila, S.A.L.T.Y., Be A Bombshell, & Circus by Andrea's Choice

Hello, my lovelies!
As I explained in my first post in this series, my eBay lot was just too big to review everything in detail all at once, plus, I can only try out so many new skin care products at one time, so I need to spread it out a bit.  Behold, part 2 of my detailed review of my awesome January eBay haul.

Crazy Awesome eBay Lot

Since I've had this lot for about a week now, I've been able to run some of these products through the ringer.

CeraVe AM facial moisturizing lotion  Cute little tube!
I have very sensitive skin that can't decide if it wants to be oily or dry. The term "normal" does not even come close to applying!  This lotion does a nice job of keeping my skin moisturized, and it's nice that it has sunscreen in it (SPF 30). The texture is pleasing, and my face was well moisturized. I will say, however, that this doesn't smell like lotion as much as it smells like sunscreen. Because I use BB cream instead of foundation (unless I'm going out), I'm not entirely sure what the point is in having an AM and PM lotion, but that's ok.  I AM Only Average, after all.  I don't actually need SPF in my lotion, so I don't think this is the right lotion for me, but it is a nice quality lotion, and the price isn't too bad either.  I will say that this lotion did not break me out so it's good for skin like mine.  Perhaps in the summer I will need more SPF than my current products have, and will try it again then.  If you are interested in giving this a go, it's available HERE, $12.99 for a 3 fl oz tube.  The retail value of my little 5g tube is $0.73, and it has lasted about a week, as I use lotion sparingly.  Great value!  GRADE: 4/5

Claudalie Vinexpert Serum
I have been enjoying one of the wrinkle cream samples that I received, the Vinexpert by Claudalie.  I've never really used wrinkle or anti-aging products before, as I've always felt that I am too young to use them, but since my last birthday, I've tried to take better care of my skin.  This sample bottle felt really light when I first opened it, so I am not sure that it was filled properly.  That being said, this stuff makes my skin feel softer and younger in the areas I have applied it.  I've used it for a bout a week, and my little sample is pretty much gone.  It has a yellowish tint to it, which isn't appealing to me, but the scent of the product is very appealing.  Now that this is gone, I will move on to testing another anti-aging cream I received.  If there is an interest, I will try to do a comparison between them all. If you want to give this a try yourself, Claudalie Vinexpert is available HERE, $88 for a 30 mL full size tube.  This little sample is 7mL, and has a retail value of $20.53.  I will be honest; cost will be a factor when I choose my "go to" anti aging formula, and this one is very pricey, so I likely won't choose it.  Gotta watch my budget! GRADE: 4.5/5

Mary Kay botanical effects mask foil packet
Ahh, the dreaded foil packets.  It's hard not to have a hate/love relationship with these.   I hate to pay for these, I hate they they are one time use, but I love finding new products and trying them out! I tried out this facial mask one evening, and according to the packet, it can be used up to 2-3 times a week.  The mask went on smoothly on damp skin, and dried up over the 10 minutes I was to leave it on.  I am always curious how something that looks like chaulky toothpaste can make my skin soft and smooth, but I guess some things are not for this average mom to know!  This mask did a nice job, and my skin was baby soft after I washed the mask off.  This is available HERE, $14 for the full size (4 oz).  The foil packet sample contains .1 oz, and has a retail value of $0.35. GRADE: 5/5

Raw Natural Minerals Active Veil with Sunscreen (SPF 18)
I've never really used a lot of mineral products before, but it is something that I would definitely like to try more of!  The Raw Natural Minerals Active Veil that I received is a full size product, and is available in only one color.  This product looks flesh toned, but I think it is more of a translucent powder.  I have used this to set my BB cream and concealer for the past week or so, and I really like it.  Loose powders, to me, are much preferable to pressed powders.  That being said, I typically use a pressed powder as my "go to" powder.  The Active Veil also contains a sunscreen, SPF 18, but it doesn't smell like sunscreen.

Swatch of Active Veil from Raw Natural Minerals
When I swatched this, it had a kind of shimmer to it, and the sparkles I saw kind of put me off.  I tried it on my face, regardless (how can you tell if you will like something just by a little hand swatch?), and I was pleasantly surprised: there was NO SPARKLES!  All of my fears of looking like i had "Vampire Fever" were squashed right away.  This powder does a decent job of setting my face; but the container has an expiration date of 3/13, and has been discontinued.  I doubt that I will run out of this powder before the end of March, but as I just took the peelie sticker off, I will probably be ok to keep using it a bit past that date.  Because Active Veil has been discontinued, it is on sale (yay!).  If you would like to try it, it's available HERE, $20 (.07 oz; it's a decent size), instead of the regular price of $25. Circus by Andrea's Choice, in the color Tightrope
When I was a tween and then in high school, I was obsessed with nails.  After college, I fell back into that same habit.  Since then, I go through phases where I NEED to get manicures, and then not caring at all.  Since my wedding, I've not had the extra money to maintain my salon habit, so I've been growing out my natural nails.  Because I am a former nail junkie, I have a box of polish that is pretty impressive.  That being said, I don't have a purple in quite this shade.  I LOVE the color, and had very high hopes for this polish.  The first thing I noticed is that this polish doesn't have a high gloss finish; it's more of a satin finish (In the pic above, my pinky is still wet, but the other fingers are pretty much dry).  I didn't bother with a primer or top coat, and this led to my destruction.  In less than 24 hours, my nails had chipped horribly, and looked like a bad week old manicure given by a 3 year old.  Trust me, I know exactly what that looks like.  I tried again, with a topcoat (and caviar on one nail!), and the polish lasted longer, but not really all that much.  Maybe I need a better topcoat, I don't know.  The Circus polish is available only as a set of 5 colors together; if you want to give this a try yourself, go HERE, it is $29.95 for the set.  My one bottle that is ALMOST full size (.45 fl oz; as apposed to .5 fl oz) has a retail value of $5.99.  If you want only this pretty purple (like me!), these are ALL over eBay. Mary Kay nourishine plus lip gloss in Fancy Nancy
I love love LOVE lip gloss!  I am not really a lipstick person, but I definitely LOVE me some gloss!  That being said, a good gloss is hard to find!  Either they don't have any staying power, or are super sticky, or had a horrible taste or texture.  This gloss absolutely hit the sweet spot for me.  Non sticky, pleasant texture, decent staying power, and a nice scent.  The color Fancy Nancy, although it has a super cute name, isn't exactly the best color for me, but I would definitely like to try this in another shade (besides the clear I also received).  I LOVE that the sample came with a teeny tiny lip wand- SO cute!  If you want to try this gloss for yourself, it's available HERE, $14 (.15 fl oz tube with attached wand). GRADE: 5/5

Be A Bombshell eyeliner in Onyx
I love eyeliners.  I love to experiment with colors and textures to give my eyes that "pop".  The Be a Bombshell eyeliner is one of the things I was MOST looking forward to receive in this lot.  I won't say I was disappointed with it, but I will say that I am not sure I LOVE it, like I did their lip gloss.  The tip of this eyeliner looks like a Crayola marker.  Don't have kids?  Go ahead and google it.  I'll wait..... Ok, see that?  That is what you are aiming at your eye, and trying to get a fine line.  See my problem?  It took some getting used to, and through trial and error, I think I have it down where I can use it.  One problem I experienced that you may too: I have crepey eyelids, and I could NOT draw a straight line to save my life with this eyeliner.  I used dots instead, and connected them, and this had a much nicer effect.  As you can see on my hand swatch, you can get a very thin line, as well as a thicker one, and you can blend it.  Once you put this on, and it dries, this sucker stays put!  One thing that I did NOT like with this product, is the cap.  It just sort of clicks on gently.  I am afraid that if the lid falls off, the marker pen will dry up easily.  I hope Bombshell works on a redesign for this product, because the formula is great.  If you are interested in this one, it is available HERE, $14 (.1 fl oz, full size, same as pictured). Stila lip glaze in lights
As a lip gloss junkie, of course I have heard of Stila.  Stila lip glazes come in a tube with a brush applicator, that you turn the bottom to force the product up into the brush.  Some people like this style of applicator, and others hate it.  I am kind of on the fence about it; I don't think it's a precise as a wand, but it's not a bad concept either.  This tube is one of a 3 pack offered (as far as I can tell) from Birchbox, where each tube is .05 oz, as opposed to the .08 fl oz that the "regular" size is.  I had to click this tube way more than I thought was normal for a click gloss; perhaps it was because it's a full size looking tube with less product in it, I don't know.  Most of the reviews I have read about this gloss is that it is not sticky, and felt nice on your lips.  Ok, I will attest to the "good feeling" part- the minty tingle is great, but I thought this is possibly the stickiest gloss I have ever worn.  I could press my lips together and literally watch (in the mirror) the gloss string as it wanted to stay connected as I opened my lips.  STICKY!!!!!  Maybe I got a bad batch, I don't know, but this definitely isn't for me!  The color was a nice nude/neutral color, and I really did like that.  I googled the crap out of this particular color, called LIGHTS, and I could only find it in a special set for Birchbox (which I don't subscribe to).  If you want to give Stila a try, their website is HERE; they have the 3 sets and full size tubes, just not in this color.  $12/3 pack (.05 oz each) or $22 full size (.08 fl oz).  My sample (1 of a 3 pack) has a retail value of $4. S.A.L.T.Y Cosmetics loose luxury mineral eye shadow in glamma-ZOID!
I LOVE eye shadows, and love to try out new brands!  I was super excited to receive this, and couldn't wait to try it out!  This is a full size product, the small 1 g container.  I love that they put a sifter in even this small of a container!  I love even more that the sifter pops out easily so you can pour any product that spilled in the lid, back into the vial.

Very shimmery and duo tone
Ok, so when I was taking pictures, my camera strap popped up, and I forgot to retake this one, so enjoy a photo of my camera strap and swatch!  The swatch is very light, as it is more of a highlight color, and it is a pearlescent purpley pinky duo tone.  I LOVE this as a corner highlight and under browbone highlighter.  This shadow stays put and is very pretty.  LOVE it!!  If you want to give it a try, it is available HERE, $4.50 for this size (1g), $14.97 for the large size (2.5 g).  GRADE: 5/5

Well, that concluded my part 2 review of my huge eBay lot.  I hope you all enjoyed it, and if there is something that you would like me to give an honest and well thought out review of, please let me know!  I love trying new things!  Love something here?  Hate it?  Have a different experience?  Leave a comment, and let me know!

January ebay Haul Review Part 1 Mary Kay, Redkin Rough Paste, NuMe Hydro Punch

Hello, all you Average people out there!

I won an ebay auction recently, for a large lot of beauty samples.  As there are SO many, if I put all of my thoughts into one post, my computer just might explode.  Therefore, I am going to try to separate my thoughts on my new things into smaller (hopefully) posts.

Lots of foil packets in my ebay haul auction lot!

Today when I woke up, I decided that I would test the Mary Kay samples I received.

Botanical Effects "Cleanse"

I used the Mary Kay Botanical Effects cleanse foil packet sample on my face, instead of my regular Clinique routine (3 steps).  According to the foil packet, the cleanser is: "Suitable for sensitive skin.  Free from alcohol, fragrance and synthetic dyes.  Non-comedogenic.  Clinically tested for skin irritancy and allergy."  All of these things are good, because I have strangely sensitive skin.  I cut open my packet and used it on my face while I was in the shower. My face did not feel as dry as it does after I use the facial soap (Step 1), which is a good thing.  As there was no follow up lotions or anything mentioned on the packet, I assume that this is supposed to replace all 3 steps of the routine I learned from Clinique, which is a cleansing soap, toning lotion, and facial lotion.  I liked the feeling on my face, and my dry skin (in the winter) did not feel dry at all.  My foil packet didn't say if it was the formula for dry, oily or normal skin, so I can't tell you exactly which one it was, but all three are available at Mary Kay, and retail for $14 for 4 oz.  The retail value of my .1 oz foil packet is $0.35.  This is much cheaper than my Clinique cleansers, so I may look into purchasing the full size of this product.  Grade: 5/5

Two foil packs in one!  Microdermabrasion, both steps. Refine and Replenish

While I was in the shower, I also decided to try the Mary Kay Timewise microdermabrasion steps 1 and 2; another foil packet.  I hate foil packets, but I do tend to try to use them, just so that they are not hanging around for my kids to get into them.  Both of the steps in my packet are for dry to oily skin (isn't that everyone?) and are oil and fragrance free.  Step 1, called Refine,  is basically a lotion substance that has tiny granules in it.  When I tried this, it didn't hurt at all, but felt like I was wet sanding my face.  I suppose essentially, I was.  What you are supposed to do is apply this to your wet face, and use your fingertips to rub it in, avoiding the eyes and mouth areas.  I then rinsed it off, and dried my face, then I applied step 2. Step 2 is called Replenish, and is basically a lotion.  After I applied this, also avoiding my mouth and eye areas as the packet suggested, my skin felt baby soft.  Seriously. What I liked about this product is that I don't need a special machine to apply the paste, I just use my fingers.  I really liked this, and may just look into getting some at a later date!  These products are also available at Mary Kay's website; step 1 is $30 for 2.5 oz.; step 2 is $25 for 1 fl. oz.  The retail value of my little foil packet is $1.20 for step 1, $1 for step 2, so $2.20 total.  Grade: 4.5/5

I figure, it can't make my eye wrinkles worse, right?

I also decided to try the little sample I have of Mary Kay's timewise age fighting wrinkle cream.  The foil packet (sigh) says to "gently pat" the product around the eye area, and that is is for dry to oily skin.  I tried this out, and it seems a little greasy for my particular taste, and I am not sure if I noticed any immediate results (that would be impressive, though!).  The sample has enough in the packet that I can try it again tomorrow, and perhaps I will have a better feel for the product then. In my ebay lot, there were several wrinkle creams, and as this is the first I've tested, I can't say if this is the best one.  This product retails for $26 for a .65 oz package.  (I think their website is trying to kill me and my below average math skills; the tube online is in oz and grams, the packet I have is in fl. oz and mL.) My best guess is that my sample foil packet has a retail value of $0.40, and I got two uses out of it.  Grade: 3/5 (neutral as I have never really used wrinkle cream before and don't really know what to expect)

Front of the card

Inside the card.  The makeup samples are on the right (under a clear film) and hints and tips are on the left.  I LOVE the lipstick sample, such a cute idea!
In the interest of keeping all the Mary Kay products together, I'm skipping hair for now, and going on to makeup.  I received a color card for the "berries" collection, and tried it out.  I have never tried to get eye shadow off of a little sample card before, and I had better luck with some brushes, than with others.  The mineral eye colors went on smoothly (after I got them off the card), and the colors I used are Sweet Plum (lid; a shimmery dark purple) Silver Satin (crease; a shimmery medium grey) and Moonstone (highlight; shimmery light shade). I like how the colors are in a set so I can see a full effect, and know that they will look good together.  My skills are Only Average, after all.  I can't say how these look in the pan (as I haven't seen or felt them), but they went on nicely and blended well (on top of UD primer potion).  The blush color (interesting to get on my brush!) is Bold Berry from the mineral cheek color collection.  After applying, I absolutely had the look of rosy cheeks.  I am picky about blush, and this is a very pretty color.  I never would have looked at this color in the store, as I think it would have been too dark, but it really wasn't, and looks nice. This blush has a semi-matte finish that suited my preferred look. That's the fun part about samples, though, finding something new to try!  The lip color on the card is called whipped berries, from their line of Creme lipstick, with a satin finish.  I loved using the sample for this, you take off the top layer of film, fold in half, and press your lips to it.  I only had to touch up a couple spots, it went on well and was fun at the same time! I'm not much of a lipstick fan, however, so I applied a gloss on top.  More on that in a minute.  Pricing on what I received samples of: (I am not even going to try to price it out individually as the samples were intended for one time use)
  Grade: 4/5

Such a CUTE little wand, I LOVE it!

I realize you can't see it, but there really IS a swatch on my hand.  it is clear, and just a touch sparkly.

Because I don't care for lipstick, I wanted to top my lips with a gloss.  I used another sample from my ebay haul, also from MK.  The Nourishine Plus lip gloss in icicle went on smooth, and had a sparkly finish.  The gloss is clear, with sparkles in it, and wasn't sticky at all.  I love how they include a tiny wand to apply the gloss with in the sample, SO cute! The sample was enough for me to use and reapply a couple times throughout the day, which is nice. There isn't a weight on the sample, so I can't tell you the value of my sample. but the full size of this product is $14 for a .15 fl oz tube, with wand applicator in the lid.  Grade: 5/5 (I hate sticky gloss, and love the sparkle!)

This is the PERFECT size to put in a teeny tiny handbag for a night out, and I LOVE that it still has a full size wand on this sample size!

I also received a "one time use" sample of MK's Ultimate Mascara, in what I assume is the color black.  I like the one time use container, and that it has a full size wand.  More companies should offer mascara samples like that!  That being said, I don't like this mascara.  My lashes still look miniscule, after multiple coats.  This did make my bottom lashes stand out a bit more, and it is staying put very well.  I had no clumping, smudging or flaking issues with it at all.  This mascara would be great for someone who already has longer length lashes, or uses falsies. I, however, have tiny lashes, and as I was going for an every day look, I didn't want to bust out my false lashes.  Maybe this would be good for bottom lashes, but not the top; either way, I don't think this product is for me.  If you want to try this one out, it is available from MK's site (or your MK rep, if you have/know one.  Retail for full size is $15.00, .28 oz tube.  I could only guess at the value of my sample, as there is no weight on the container, just "one time use".  Grade: 3/5 (simply because my bottom lashes look nice)

Cute little tube, and it was sealed on the inside (love that!), about enough in the sample for two uses.
While I was in the shower, I also tried a conditioner that was my sample lot, that is from a brand I have never heard before, called NuMe.  I live under a rock, ok, and my hair is so hard to style, I usually just give up the fight early on.  The name of the conditioner is Hydro Punch, and the pack of the tube reads, "Professional solution for dry or coloured hair making revolutionary synergy between traditional Moroccan Berber women Argan oil and innovative patented technology of Seratin-K protein complex. The active ingredients replenish moisture for intense softness, movement and shine.  Ok, I'm not entirely sure what all that means and I don't understand all of those words, but I do know Argan oil is good for my hair, and I'll try anything once.  I used this after my normal shampoo, and my hair didn't feel soft after I rinsed it out, so I used my deep conditioning treatment afterwards (I have crazy dry and super thin hair).  The final result was my hair was softer than if I don't use conditioner before I use the deep conditioning treatment, so I think it did some good.  I'm not sure I would go to the trouble of ordering this, though, so once my little tube is empty, that will probably be the end of it, since I can get decent conditioners at my local grocery store, or at the 'Mart.  If you want to try it out, it is available HERE, and is $24.99 for 8.45 oz. My .67 oz sample has the retail value of $2  Grade: 4/5

Very nice sized sample, I will get several uses out of this.
After I washed my hair, I applied Argon oil (as usual), and tried another sample from my haul, to use during styling.  I have super dry, thin and kinky curly hair, so it is very hard to manage.  I received a sample of Redken Rough paste 12, and decided to try it out.  After googling it to figure out what it is supposed to do (the only hint on the container is "working material".  What exactly does that mean?), I applied a quarter sized amount to my hair (it may be thin but it's long), and worked it in.  I am happy to say that it helped define my curls a bit, and definitely added volume to my hair.  I will have to give this product a bit longer test, but my first impression is that it is something that I would like to try again, and because it's a deluxe size sample, I can!  This stuff absolutely took my below average hair, and made it at least Only Average (as we all know is all I try to be), so that is definitely a step in the right direction!  Ulta sells this in store only, and carry both the full and the "travel size" I received, the full size (2.5 oz) is $18, the .75oz sample/travel size is $5.50.  Drugstore.com also sells the full size of this product for $18.90.  Grade: so far, 4/5 (I wish it had a little more hold)

So, here is my final look, with the products listed above.  I also used:
Maybelline New York Dream Fresh BB creme (light)
Urban Decay Primer Potion (original)
Hard Candy Glamoflauge heavy duty concealer (light)
Raw Natural Minerals Active Veil
Be a Bombshell eyeliner (Onyx)

Note the teeny, tiny lashes.
Today's awkward pose

Enjoy!
